You’d be forgiven for thinking that an Indian head massage focuses solely on the head but as well as the scalp and the face, other areas of the upper body that hold tension, such as the back, neck and shoulders are massaged. This treatment also stimulates noted ‘acupressure’ points.
I trained in Indian head massage in 2010. This taught me the traditions and techniques of the modality. Over the years, I have adapted my massage treatments and while the focus remains on releasing muscle tension across the upper body, neck, shoulders, head and face, I don’t always include the traditional techniques in my sessions.
For this treatment the client lies on the massage couch (you’re required to disrobe however you will be covered by towels with only the area being worked on uncovered). Alternatively, you can receive the treatment sitting in on a chair (please wear loose fitting clothing so you won’t feel restricted or uncomfortable).
Indian head massage may:
- provide relief from muscular tension
- provide relief of neck and shoulder stiffness
- help improve symptoms of insomnia, headaches, ear problems and fatigue
