Deep tissue massage is similar to Swedish massage, yet uses slower strokes to go deeper in to the muscle tissue to release chronic tension and to realign layers of muscles and connective tissue (or ‘fascia’). Adhesions can restrict circulation, cause pain and inflammation, and limit movement. The deep tissue massage techniques used are very helpful on tight areas found in the neck & shoulders and lower back.
My training with the Jing Institute of Advanced Massage, in Edinburgh, has given me advanced massage skills to help deal effectively with muscle tension. These massage techniques include trigger point therapy, myofascial release, table shiatsu, passive stretching and power effleurage.
When focussing on specific areas there can be some stiffness or achiness for a day or two afterwards this is due to the breaking down of adhesions, which had formed.
For these deep tissue massage treatments you’re required to disrobe and lie on a massage table. However, your modesty will be preserved, as all body parts will be covered except for the area being worked on.
Deep tissue massage & bodywork may:
- help ease chronic tension such as a stiff neck, lower back tension and sore shoulders
- provide stress relief
- stimulate blood circulation which improves supply of oxygen and nutrients to body tissues
- help keep ligaments and tendons supple and pliable
